FedEx St Jude Classic - Day One, Aussies in the Mix

FedEx St Jude Classic 2018, Memphis. Round One - Aussies in the Mix

The FedEx St Jude Classic is the last PGA Tour Stop before the US Open next week.  It is hosted by the TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.

At the end of the first day of the tournament Irishman Seamus Power is at the top of the leaderboard on 5-under-par 65. One shot behind him are about a dozen others on 4-under 66. Australia's Stuart Appleby is among them. Fellow Aussie Matt Jones is a shot back on 3-under while Aaron Baddeley is on even-par.

Power is hoping to make his first PGA Tour Victory here in a place that is familiar. He played college golf at East Tennessee State University where he won five times. He has played on the Web.com Tour and is the first Irishman to win on the Web.com Tour. He represented Ireland at the Olympics.

Here in his first FedEx round he missed five greens in regulation but saved par four times in his six-birdie round. His birdie on the 18th from six feet gave him sole lead over the chasing pack.

"You are going to hit it in some awkward spots to try and get it up and down," Power said afterwards.  "So I was able to do that today and had some pretty decent control of my ball, and I was able to hit it in spots where getting up and down was possible at least.

"I am going to need that for sure the next couple of days."

Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka are among the group tied on second. Dustin Johnson and An Byeong-Hun, who was in last week's playoff, are among the 3-unders.
