Fort Worth Invitational at The Colonial 24-27 May

Fort Worth Invitational 2018 at The Colonial,  24-27 May

The Fort Worth Invitational, originally known as the Colonial National Invitation, was first held 72 years ago. This annual golf tournament is organised and hosted by the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. It is one of five invitational tournaments on the PGA Tour. A feature of the tournament is the wearing of an official Scottish tartan plaid jacket by officials and champions in honour of the game's origins.

Another feature, which at this time is unique within the PGA Tour, is the Champion's Choice invitation. This allows former champions to select two young players, who would otherwise not be eligible, to compete in the tournament. Five Champions Choices have gone on to win at the Colonial and one of those, Dave Stockton, won in the year he was selected.

The iconic Wall of Champions is found here on the first tee.  The name and score of every tournament champion from the beginning in 1946 is engraved on this wall. Included are such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Ian Baker-Finch, and more recently Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Zach Johnson, Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth. The first winner was Fort Worth resident Ben Hogan who went on to win five times. Hogan claimed nine major titles during his career and six of these were won after a near-fatal car crash. A statue of Hogan is close to the clubhouse.

Defending Champion in 2018 is Kevin Kisner. Kisner's 10-under 270 earned him the championship by one stroke over a trio of fervent competitors: Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Sean O'Hair. Rahm is competing again this year and he says he particularly likes the golf course.

"Really I grew up next to a golf course very similar to this, tree lined," Rahm said.  "A lot more trees than this one has. Narrow fairways, but it's not long. After playing there for so long, I got used to just hitting drivers all over the place, right? When I came here and I saw the golf course, I'm like, I'm just going to keep doing the same thing."
