Jon Rahm Wins Spanish Open 2018 - the Open de España, Madrid
Jon Rahm won the Spanish Open last week, taking his third European Tour title. Irishman Paul Dunne and fellow Spaniard Nacho Elvira gave him a fight to the finish. This is his first professional win on his home ground.
At the start of the final round Rahm was third on the leaderboard, two shots behind Dunne, who had led through the earlier rounds, and one behind Elvira. Rahm's final round score of 5-under 67 gave him a two shot win with a final total of 20-under par 268. Both Dunne and Elvira carded 71 for their final rounds.
23 year old Rahm is presently ranked as world Number 4 and is the sixth Spaniard to win the Spanish Open since it joined the European Tour in 1972. Other Spanish winners include Seve Balesteros and Sergio Garcia.
“When I made the decision to come straight from Augusta it wouldn’t be to just show up and walk around, I wanted to win this tournament,” Rahm said with some emotion.
“I’ve been blessed to be national champion from 16 to all ages in Spain. To round my amateur and pro career together in this way and win the last one I had to win and join that prestigious list of Spanish winners, it’s hard to explain how good it feels and how satisfying it is.”
Rahm's charismatic performance and evident love of the game at the Open de España has inspired thousands of others. The European Tour reports 7,000 new members have signed on already.
Rahm dedicated his win to the people of Spain.
