Marc Leishman will work feverishly on retrieving his game after being left shattered at missing the British Open halfway cut.

Leishman's second-round 72 at Royal Portrush wasn't even close to sparing him after the damage was done with a disastrous 78 to open the championship.

His eight-over-par total was at odds with three top-six finishes in his previous five Open starts, including a runner's-up finish in 2015 when the Victorian lost a three-hole playoff at St Andrews to Zach Johnson.

"Yeah, it didn't pan out how I wanted it to. I played terrible both days," Leishman said before setting his sights on next week's important US PGA Tour event in Memphis.

Forty seven of the world's top 50 players have entered the WGC Fed-Ex St Jude Invitational and the 24th-ranked Leishman knows he has plenty of work to do to compete.

"I've just got to do a bit of work really. I played bad and need to sort it out," he said.

"So get on the range and hit some balls pretty much."

Leishman only made three birdies in 36 holes at the season's final major.

"I wasn't reading the greens well so I didn't make many putts," he said.

"My irons were bad, which is normally the strength of my game.

"I drove it okay so that's probably the only positive to take out of the week.

"So pretty disappointing. One of my favourite tournaments of the year.

"Hopefully I'll be back next year and give it another crack."

In the meantime, Leishman will keep a close eye on The Open progress of countryman and great mate Cameron Smith, who charged into contention at Portrush with a sizzling second-round 66.

"I'll watch for sure. I hope he goes well," Leishman said.

"We played some practice rounds together. We both try to learn off each other.

"I definitely try to learn off him and I assume he's doing the same from me.

"He was hitting it well early in the week so hopefully he can have a good weekend and get amongst it."
