Rocco Forte Sicilian Open 2018 - Lagergren Wins, Herbert Tied 3rd

Swedish golfer Joakim Lagergren has won the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open in a playoff against Frenchman Michael Lorenzo-Vera. Tied in third are Australian Lucas Herbert and Englishman Andy Sullivan.

Lagergren began the final round two strokes behind Lorenzo-Vera. His opening 30 foot birdie was soon followed by three more birdies in the first nine holes, and he soon closed the gap. His round of 3-under 68 tied them both at the top on 16-under 268. At the playoff a birdie at the first hole gave Lagergren victory.

Herbert and Sullivan are one shot back on 15-under 269. Herbert's final round 8-under 63 was the lowest round total for the week.

26 year old Lagergren was looking for his first European Tour win after 130 European Tour events. He had made it to a playoff once before, at last year's Qatar Masters. That was a three way playoff against South African Jaco van Zyl and Korean Juenghun Wang, and Wang was the victor. This time Lagergren collected the trophy.

"I've been waiting for this moment my whole career," he said. "I'm so relieved and I'm so happy at the moment, I can't describe it in words. I've just been fighting so hard to get to here, it's just awesome.

"When you're just missing out a few times you really want to get that first win and it feels like you really need to get over that first step to then really continue and get more and more. This is a big step for me."
