Sony Open 2021 Round One: Three Share the Lead

Round One of the 2021 Sony Open in Hawaii wraps up with three players sharing the lead on 8-under par 62.  They are Peter Malnati and Jason Kokrak from the US and 22 year old Joaquin Niemann from Chile.  Niemann is runner up from the Kapalua TOC after a playoff against Harris English.

Australia's Aaron Baddeley is in the group immediately following the leaders, two strokes back on 6-under 64.

"Of the other Australians, Marc Leishman shot 66 to be tied 25th, Cameron Smith had a 67, Cameron Davis 68, while Adam Scott, Rhein Gibson and Matt Jones posted 69s."  - Golf Australia

After his cruising win at Kapalua, here at Waialae Harris English hit three bogeys on the back nine. Two birdies then brought him to even-par 70.

From the PGA Tour's Daily Wrap-up:

-   Four days after a pair of pars on the final hole at Kapalua led to a playoff loss, Niemann holed a 50-foot chip for eagle on the 18th hole Thursday for an 8-under 62 and a share of the lead with Jason Kokrak and Peter Malnati.

-   Kokrak played bogey-free, and he was as pleased with a 15-foot par putt on No. 1 -- his 10th hole of the round -- as any of his nine birdies. He had a 25-foot eagle putt for 61 on his closing hole that narrowly missed.

-   Malnati was the only one at 62 who played in the morning, though conditions were similar for much of the day.

Malnati's comment on Twitter after his strong early lead:

“My swing is not Adam Scott-esque. It has a little bit of, I’ll say – idiosyncrasy is a good word. But when I give myself the time to sync everything up, pretty brilliant.”

Malnati's round, from GolfWeek:

When he fired a final-round 63 in Mississippi, Malnati said he’d be hard pressed to find a better round than that one, but he might have to reconsider after his sizzling start in the Aloha State.  Malnati got the birdie fest going with a 35-foot birdie at No. 11, his second hole of the day.  His short irons did most of the rest as Malnati’s longest of the remaining eight birdies was from 14 feet.  It didn’t hurt that he chipped in for birdie at No. 3 from 30 feet off the green, which contributed to Malnati tying a career-low with just 21 putts.
