The Masters at Augusta National 2021 - Round One

Justin Rose fires an amazing first round

From Golfweek:

Coming off a back injury and four weeks without competition, Justin Rose didn’t know what to expect from his game. All the former World No. 1 knew is that he had been practicing hard and Augusta National is among his favorite places on the planet. Sean Foley, his swing instructor, concurred.

“He said, Buddy, I don’t know if you’re close or not, I just know you’re better,’ ” Rose recounted.

Was he ever. Rose overcame a sluggish start and played 9 under for a 10-hole stretch to shoot 7-under 65 and build a four-stroke lead over Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harman after the first round of the 85th Masters. Playing in the afternoon when the wind kicked up and the average score was 74.5, Rose beat his career-best in 58 previous rounds at Alister MacKenzie and Bobby Jones’s famed layout by two strokes.  Read the full article here

From Golf Digest:

Rose made an eagle and seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch Thursday. Your eyes do not betray you. It was a performance that translated to a seven-under 65 and a four-shot lead as the Englishman grabbed the reins of an opening round at the 85th Masters that threw most of the field, especially those in the afternoon wave, out of the saddle.

“If you had said to me walking up the eighth hole [I’d shoot a 65], I’d have said no chance, this course is playing a little too tricky for that,” Rose said. “But it’s incredible. It’s a good reminder that you just never know what can happen out there.”  Read more here

From Andrew Both, Reuters:

Rose, who withdrew from his last start a month ago with back spasms, kicked off his torrid run at the par-five eighth where he made eagle after his approach shot from 275 yards bounced off a greenside slope and settled nine feet from the cup.

From there, Rose was locked in and birdied all but three of his remaining 10 holes in one of the most brilliant stretches of golf ever seen at the Masters.  Read more here
