Wells Fargo Championship 2018 - Quail Hollow

Wells Fargo Championship 2018 - First week of May at Quail Hollow GC, North Carolina

The first rounds of the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship get underway on Thursday 3rd May at the Quail Hollow Golf Club. The PGA Tour tournament runs through Sunday 6th May.  Last year Brian Harman's 28-foot birdie putt on the 18th gave him the winning edge over Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez, his 10-under beating them by one stroke.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Tommy Fleetwood, Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama and Phil Mickelson are among the contenders for the championship. For both Woods and McIlroy, this is their first tournament since the Masters. Woods won on the Quail Hollow course in 2007 but has not played here since 2012. Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler have also won here in previous events.

McIlroy won his first PGA Tour event on this course and when he returned to win again he set the tournament record. In 2010 he won with 15-under, four strokes ahead of Phil Mickelson. In 2012 Rickie Fowler beat him at the playoff and McIlroy tied second with Darren Points. In 2015 he won by seven strokes and a massive 21-under.

Quail Hollow has a particularly challenging finish, with holes 16, 17 and 18, also known as "the green mile", among the toughest on the PGA Tour.  Originally designed by George Cobb, modifications have been made over the years. Arnold Palmer had a role in alterations to some of the holes in 1986, then a redesign by Tom Fazio was made in 1997.

In August 2017 the PGA Championship was held at Quail Hollow and Justin Thomas won by two strokes.
