Wells Fargo 2018 - Round 3 - Jason Day Leads!

At the end of the third round at Quail Hollow Australian Jason Day has the lead by two strokes. He began the round tied with Aaron Wise just one shot behind Peter Malnati. Then as Malnati fell to 4-over, Day strode into the lead with a 10-under 67.

A bogey on the 5th did not deter Day, though he says, "It was a bit of a struggle to get through [the first] eight holes. Then a nice shot into the ninth hole for a tap-in birdie and a good drive down 10 kind of really started getting things in the right direction."

The "right direction" included birdies on the 10th, 12th, 14th and 15th holes. At the 18th he took off his shoes and socks and went into the water to hit a shot to the back of green. His feet were in the water. The ball was on the bank, above his feet. He sliced a wedge to the green for a two-putt par. He was now on 10-under 203.

American Nick Watney is close behind on 8-under 66, his first time being in the final group since injury four years ago. Watney's fellow American Peter Uihlein is among the four who are one more stroke back. Uihlein began the third round with 2-over par, then shot five birdies in a row from the fifth hole and an eagle on the tenth, followed by two more good shots on the 14th and 15th. His 9-under 62 was just off the course record.

With him are Aaron Wise, who had dropped back after bogeys on two of his last three holes, Bryson DeChambeau and Paul Casey. English golfer Casey recovered after two bogeys set him back early in the round. Two birdies and an eagle brought him 2-under 71 for the round.

Tiger Woods had some struggles with his putting through the week. During this round he hit three consecutive birdies on the back nine but then a three-putt bogey on the 18th left him with 68, nine shots off the lead. Rory McIlroy is on 66, seven shots from the lead. This is a ten shot rebound from his Friday tally of 76. Phil Mickelson is four shots off the lead on 64.
