2018 World Golf Championships - Mexico Championship

2018 WGC-Mexico Championship

The 2018 WGC-Mexico Championship runs from 1st - 4th March at Club de Golf Chapultepec, just west of Mexico City. It is the first of the World Golf Championship events for 2018. The 7,330 yard (6,704 metre) par 71 golf course is approximately 2,400 metres (7,870 feet) above sea level.

The high altitude of the course means that golf balls will take flight more easily and they will travel further than normally expected. For tournament competitors precision will be paramount, rather than the power of shots. This has been factored into the design of the course, with care and precision being the way to success. The greens mostly slope down towards Mexico City. Fairways tend to be slim, sloping and lined quite densely with trees.  The uphill sloping holes 15, 16 and 17 are particularly challenging.

The course design was completed in 1921 and the first Mexico Open was staged here in 1944. When the WGC-Mexico Championship was held here last year this became the first official European Tour event to be hosted in Mexico. Dustin Johnson was competing against Tommy Fleetwood at the end, and Johnson took the title by one shot.

65 professionals are in the field, including 45 of the top 50 golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking. Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Tommy Fleetwood and Shubhankar Sharma will be there.
