BMW PGA Championship Day 2: Aphibarnrat leads; Scott two back; Lowry fights for Ryder Cup place

European Tour, BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth, UK:  9-12 Sept, Day 2

Aphibarnrat leads, Adam Scott is two back, Shane Lowry fights for his place in the Ryder Cup team

From European Tour News (1):

[Kiradech Aphibarnrat] has twice been a runner up in Rolex Series events but after missing 11 of his first 15 cuts worldwide in 2021 following an injury disrupted 2019 and Covid interrupted 2020, he would not have been among the favourites arriving at Wentworth Golf Club.

But the 32 year old is not a four time European Tour winner for nothing and he followed up his opening 64 to get to 12 under and lead by one shot from home favourite Laurie Canter, who carded a 66, and Italian Francesco Laporta who signed for a bogey free 65.

From European News (2):

Shane Lowry gave his Ryder Cup hopes a major boost as he carded a 66 to move himself right into the mix on day two of the 2021 BMW PGA Championship.

The Irishman entered the week at Wentworth Golf Club in an automatic qualification spot for Padraig Harrington's team but also as potentially the most likely man to drop out should results not go his way, admitting on Wednesday that his rivals would be "gunning" for him.

A host of scenarios could still play out over the West Course before the week is out but after adding a 66 to his opening 70, Lowry was within touching distance of the leaders after 36 holes.  Read more

From the Belfast Telegraph:

England’s Laurie Canter set the halfway target in the BMW PGA Championship as the Ryder Cup qualifying battle continued to dominate the agenda at Wentworth but Shane Lowry has fired himself into contention with a sublime second round.

Canter carded eight birdies and two bogeys in a second round of 66 to post a halfway total of 11 under par, three shots clear of a six-strong group which included former Open champion Lowry.

Lowry matched Canter’s 66 as he looked to cement his place in the automatic Ryder Cup qualifying places and secure a coveted debut at Whistling Straits later this month.  Read more
