Cameron Smith rockets up the leaderboard into contention - The Players, Round Three

The Players 2021 at TPC Sawgrass - Round Three

Cameron Smith blasts up the leaderboard 39 places

From Zac Rayson at Fox Sports:

Australian Cameron Smith hit the second-best round of the third day so far to charge up the leaderboard at the Players Championship.

But Bryson DeChambeau was on fire with a five-under 67 to take the sole lead at 11-under, before yesterday’s leader Lee Westwood fired another superb four-under round to move to 13-under and enter the final day two shots in front.

Smith had managed just even par through two rounds and only made the cut thanks to a birdie on the final hole of his second round. But a seven-under 65 third round launched him into contention for the US 2.7 million dollar winner’s prize at TPC Sawgrass, six shots behind Westwood.

It wasn’t the smoothest of rounds – and certainly hasn’t been the smoothest of tournaments so far for the Aussie – with a double bogey on 10 after finding a tree and a fairway bunker.

He found plenty of bunkers (and trees) through the round, but pulled out plenty of inventive saves.

His luck peaked when he somehow managed to find an eagle chip at the par-4 12th, after hitting a sprinkler head on the fringe of the green.   More here, including video, tweets, & how to watch the final
