1:1 Golf Coaching – Corporate Packages – Group Experiences

I have spent, like many others, long hours practicing golf on the driving range and around the practice green. I have also had moments, again like many others, where I could get on an amazing roll and hit shot after shot after shot perfectly. Sometimes even winning multiple major championships in a single day!

But when I got on the golf course I used to play like a total idiot. Seriously,” how can you practice so well then just somehow lose your motor skills between the driving range and the first tee”. I have often thought of walking back to see if my motor skills were lying back on the ground somewhere.

Consciously It became my main goal NOT to embarrass myself whilst playing, even at a professional level. This of course did not help and playing defensively and controlled does not seem to work either.

I started playing golf at the age of 12 as a beginner, people often think that all Golf Pro's never started as beginners and are all freakish childhood prodigies of some sort Now to make it even harder, I have actually choose to become a beginner twice changing from left-handed to right-handed at the age of 19, two years after turning professional. So, I know what I am talking about when I say I have done the hard yards.

The last 30 years of being a Golf Professional I have spent trying to become the best player I could whist giving countless hours of golf coaching (I would say around 30,000 hours and counting). I have taught in Australia and Europe to all ages, genders, and many different nationalities. All these students regardless of their background would consistently turn up with the normal and reoccurring golfing problems that I have had also experienced time after time, fixing them on the driving range before watching them and myself fail again out on the golf course. Failing is maybe a big word but certainly strangling for the consistency.

Then, JUST three years ago (2017) something changed…...I started coaching at a golf course that did not have a driving range but only a small practice hole. I could do the basics there, but I found myself going out on the course with my students to “practice on the course”. We started practicing all the different types of shots instead of just the technical aspects of the one shot. We started driving, hitting 2nd shots, pitching, chipping, and putting, hitting only 1 or 2 balls at any given time. What happened next was amazing and the students started to firstly enjoy their lessons more but even more importantly melt all the ingredients of each shot together in a real playing situation and start playing more consistently.

It is actually well known but “The secret” here lies in the fact that we learn quicker on the course than on the boring driving range. The knowledge that everybody was getting was the same, but the experience was totally different. They could understand the purpose of the shot they were about to play and quickly work on the structure needed to hit more consistent shots and there was no more guessing needed. When you do all your practice on the driving range and only technique you take that process to the golf course and as you already know this does not work. You need to be flipped around!

So, now all my students go on the course, we make a PLAN, we work on strategies to PREPARE all aspects needed to PREFORM time after time, without feeling like an idiot. The process is ongoing but fun understandable and easy to follow.

The idiot has left me for someone else and I now know how to keep my motor skills close at hand and I hit my second shot first.
