Genesis Open 2018 Round Two
Fading light again interrupted completion of a round at the 2018 Genesis Open, this time the 2nd round. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell is sharing the lead with Patrick Cantlay and his fellow American Sam Saunders on 7-under-par.
Tiger Woods missed the cut after finishing the round with 5-over 76. As tournament host he will remain at the Riviera for the duration of the tournament.
“I'm both pleased and also not very happy with some parts of it. It's nice to be back competing again and to be able to go out there and play, practice after each round … something I haven't done in years … keep building,” he said.
He is looking ahead to The Honda Classic, opening next week in Woods' own neighbourhood in Florida. This will be the first time in three years that he has played consecutive tournament weeks.
Rory McIlroy will also be at The Honda Classic. During round two of the Genesis Open he missed two four ft putts and ended the round with 2-under 69, five shots off the lead. He is tied at 15th with the third member of their group, Justin Thomas.
The crowds of onlookers and their noisy interjections got McIlroy down, and he thought they were a factor in Woods' low scoring.
“It might always have been like this, like the whole Tiger mania and these dudes, but I swear, playing in front of all that, he gives up half a shot a day on the field,” McIlroy said.
“It’s two shots a tournament he has to give because of all that that goes on around. So, whether that calms down the more he plays and it doesn’t become such a novelty that he’s back out playing again, I don’t know…
“But it’s tiring. I need a couple Advil. I’ve got a headache after all that.”
