DP World Tour 2022, Genesis Scottish Open, The Renaissance Club, Scotland: 7-10 July
Day One: Cameron Tringale fires 61, leads by three
From DP World Tour News:
The Renaissance Club sounds like the perfect place for an artist and that is what Cameron Tringale said he felt like after storming to the first-round lead at the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open.
The American shot a course-record-equalling 61 to lead a star-studded field that included 14 of the top 15 on the Official World Golf Ranking.
Tringale took advantage of kind early conditions when he teed off in the third Rolex Series event of 2022 - a tournament co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR - and was three shots clear of his closest challenger, fellow American Gary Woodland, at the end of an entertaining day. Read more
From ESPN, by AP:
NORTH BERWICK, Scotland -- Cameron Tringale has played 331 times on the PGA Tour without winning. His career-best round of 9-under 61 might help him change that at a tournament run by the European tour.
Tringale ran off six straight birdies to start the back nine at The Renaissance Club on Thursday and had a 3-shot lead in the Scottish Open, the first European event co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour. Read more
From Planet Sport, by Scott Allen:
American Cameron Tringale made nine birdies in 11 holes, including six in a row from the 10th, on his way to a course record-equalling 61 at the Renaissance Club.
On nine under par Tringale held a three-shot lead over former US Open champion Gary Woodland, who recorded an eagle and four birdies in his bogey-free 64.
"I've had some flashes of brilliance in the last couple of months but this was a special day for sure," said Tringale, who won a team event with Jason Day in 2014 but has yet to taste victory in an individual PGA Tour event.
"It would mean a whole lot (to win). I haven't had a professional win on my own, and obviously Scotland is where golf started, so this place is special. Everyone here has appreciation for the game." Read more
From CBS Sports, by Kyle Porter:
The first round of the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open featured everything you could possibly want from the first of eight straight rounds of golf in Scotland. Cameron Tringale holds the lead after shooting a shocking and record-setting 61, and many big time stars were flummoxed all day by the heavy wind and slow greens.
Justin Thomas (again!) caught the wrong end of the draw, which emerged as a prominent storyline in Round 1, Will Zalatoris did something I've never seen happen on a golf course (and I doubt anybody else ever has, either) and somehow -- in one of the strongest fields of the entire year -- there's only one top-10 player in the world inside the top 14 after 18 holes of play. Defending champion is Australian Min Woo Lee, who won in 2021 after a three way playoff against Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry. Min Woo Lee's winning 8 foot birdie putt at the first playoff hole followed on from a final round that included six straight birdies on the front nine.
The Scottish Open, Qualifiers: Three spots in the 150th Open at St Andrews are available. These will go to the three best-placed players who are not already exempt and who have made the cut at The Renaissance Club.
Australians in the field: Min Woo Lee, Cameron Smith, Lucas Herbert, Jason Scrivener, Marc Leishman, Scott Hend, Maverick Antcliff.
