Jin Young Ko wins Tour Championship and LPGA Player of the Year award

This was not the way the LPGA planned on celebrating its 70th birthday, but really nothing could have honored the 13 Founders who created the Tour in 1950 better than the way this generation struggled through 2020. The diverse daughters of today’s LPGA did the mothers of the Tour proud.
In that first season, the LPGA Tour played 15 events and changed the face of sports. That 18 of the scheduled 34 tournaments in 2020 were played is an achievement nearly as monumental. Never have so few events meant so much to so many players.
And the season ended in fitting fireworks on Sunday at the CME Group Tour Championship with a final-round threesome that included the top two players in the Rolex Rankings: No. 1 Jin Young Ko and No. 2 Sei Young Kim. Read more

NAPLES, Fla. – Facing high stakes against her toughest opponent, Jin Young Ko delivered a performance that was close to perfect Sunday to win the richest prize in women’s golf and overtake Nelly Korda for LPGA Player of the Year.
Ko opened with a 25-foot birdie putt and never looked back in the CME Group Tour Championship. She shot 30 on the front nine and closed with the low round of the tournament at 9-under 63 for a one-shot victory of Nasa Hataoka of Japan.
So flawless was Ko that she hit the final 63 greens in regulation at Tiburon Golf Club. Read more

NAPLES, Fla. Amy Olson helped celebrate Jin Young Ko’s big win at the LPGA Tour’s season finale by spraying champagne on the player of the year with a few others.
But while Olson counts the South Korean as a friend, she’s still a little mad at how easy Ko made golf look through the second half of 2021, including at the CME Group Tour Championship, Ko’s fifth win of the season. Read more
