LPGA: Lotte Championship 10th Anniversary, Day One: Hannah Green leading

LPGA 2022: Lotte Championship, Hoakalei CC, Oahu, Hawaii, 13-16 April: Day One

Hannah Green leading on Day One in Hawaii

From LPGA Communications:

Australian Hannah Green more than survived the nearly 30-mph winds that buffeted Oahu’s Hoakalei Country Club on Wednesday. She thrived. The major champion from Perth carded eight birdies and two bogeys in the first round of the 2022 LOTTE Championship and leads the field at -6. She is looking for her first victory since a two-win season in 2019...

Aditi Ashok, Gemma Dryburgh, Hyo Joo Kim, Alison Lee and Jodi Ewart Shadoff are tied for second at -5. Defending LOTTE champion Lydia Ko shot -3 and is tied for 11th.  Read more

From PGA of Australia, by Tony Webeck:

Playing good friend and fellow Aussie Su Oh for a feed has proven to be the ideal preparation as Hannah Green took a one-stroke lead on day one of the Lotte Championship in Hawaii.

After nine years at the Ko Olina Golf Club, this year the Lotte Championship has moved to Hoakalei Country Club at Ewa Beach on Oahu, giving players a blank canvas on which to plan their strategy.

Green and caddie Nate Blasko rode the trademark Hawaiian winds to an opening round of six-under 66 in Round 1, one clear of Aditi Ashok, Alison Lee, Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Gemma Dryburgh and Hyo Joo Kim.  Read more

From Golfweek, by Beth Ann Nichols:

If history is any indication, the winner of this week’s Lotte Championship will enjoy even more success in 2022.

Since 2012, the champion of the Lotte has gone on to win multiple titles in the same year. For last year’s champion Lydia Ko, that second title came in Saudi Arabia last fall on the Ladies European Tour.  Read more

From Golf Australia, by Rod Morri:

COURSE: The course will be an interesting test for this week’s field as it plays host to a professional tournament for the first time.

Designed by Ernie Els as the centrepiece of a residential estate in 2009, images and the limited reviews available online suggest a resort style at Hoakalei Country Club that should offer little resistance to a field of this calibre.  Read more

Defending Champion: Lydia Ko

Aussies in the field: Hannah Green, Sarah Kemp, Stephanie Kyriacou, Su Oh, Karis Davidson, Sarah Jane Smith

From the Lotte website:  Defending champion Lydia Ko will be part of the field of 144 players competing for a $2 million purse, with $300,000 awarded to the winner. In last year's LOTTE Championship played at Kapolei Golf Club, Ko set a tournament record with a score of 28-under 260 and secured a dominant seven-stroke victory over Sei Young Kim, Nelly Korda, Leona Maguire and Inbee Park.
