Rory McIlroy delivers title defence, 21st win, "just when we need it the most"

TORONTO, Ont. – At the RBC Canadian Open media day in May, tournament organizers said their only wish for the event’s first playing since 2019 was for Mother Nature to cooperate.

We got it all from Rory McIlroy in the final round of the RBC Canadian Open, from the sublime to the hide-behind-the-sofa short missed putts.
But with McIlroy you know it can be a rollercoaster ride and this week we were rewarded at St George’s Golf and Country Club with his first ever successful title defence as McIlroy closed out a two-shot win over playing partner Tony Finau for his 21st PGA Tour victory, and his first since October. “Super happy to defend, even though it doesn't feel like a defence because it's been so long,” said McIlroy. “And then just to play in a final group like that with that atmosphere all day. I mean the fans here this week have just been absolutely unbelievable.”
Fans rushed the fairway at St. George's Golf and Country Club after McIlroy, Finau, and Thomas got on the 18th green. Security guards and police officers had to restrain the crowd as McIlroy sank a four-foot putt for birdie to seal the win. Read more

TORONTO — As Rory McIlroy was about to knock in a four-foot putt to defend his Canadian Open title, hundreds of fans who’d rushed as close as security would let them get to the 18th green — some fans stood in bunkers, and one declared, beer-in-hand: “I love you so much, Rory!” — waited for the champ to make it official.
McIlroy rolled in that four-footer and the thousands of onlookers who’d been asked to stay “quiet, please” immediately erupted, chanting “Rory! Rory! Rory!” for hardly the first time on Sunday at St. George’s G&CC. Read more
