Aus Golfer Min Woo Lee Wins the Scottish Open!

Australian golfers are on fire!  For the third time in the last eight days an Australian golfer has taken out a Tour tournament.

This weekend it was Min Woo Lee, winner of the 2020 Men's Victorian Open, who has now qualified in style to play at the 149th Open at Royal St Georges this week.  Last weekend Lucas Herbert won the Irish Open while Cam Davis took out the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Brilliant results for Australian golfers!

From the ET Rolex Series News:

Min Woo Lee held his nerve to collect his maiden Rolex Series title with a brilliant play-off victory over Thomas Detry and Matt Fitzpatrick at the 2021 abrdn Scottish Open.

The Australian started the day three shots behind his play-off rivals at The Renaissance Club but burst into contention thanks to birdie blitz from the third, where he picked up six consecutive shots.

Detry reclaimed the lead at 18 under at the 13th but the Belgian was desperately unlucky as the hooter sounded for a 90 minute delay for thunder and lightning as he was mid-swing for a par putt at the 14th and missed the effort to slip back.

From the Belfast Telegraph, by Phil Casey:

Australia’s Min Woo Lee revealed he was inspired by Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic after beating Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry in a play-off to win the £5.8million abrdn Scottish Open.

Lee birdied the first extra hole after the leading trio had finished tied on 18 under par at the Renaissance Club following a 90-minute weather delay late in the final round.

The 22-year-old, whose sister Minjee Lee was runner-up in the Ladies Scottish Open at nearby Gullane in 2018, had earlier birdied six holes in a row from the third on his way to a flawless closing 64.  Read more

From The Courier UK, by Steve Scott:

Australia’s Min Woo Lee, ranked 240 in the world and easily the outsider on a starry leaderboard, was still the one to carry off the abrdn Scottish Open title on a rainy evening at The Renaissance Club.

The 22-year-old from Perth – Western Australian version – holed a clutch ten foot birdie putt in the first hole of a three-way play-off. He edged Matt Fitzpatrick of England and Belgium’s Thomas Detry in extra time after a surge of six successive birdies had catapulted him to a final round 64.  Read more
