Ortiz & Reed Tied at Top, Heading into Final at Farmers Insurance Open

PGA Tour 2021 - Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines - Round Three

Heading into the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open 2021, Mexico's Carlos Ortiz is tied at the top of the leaderboard with American Patrick Reed on 10-under par, 206.

Round Two leader Viktor Hovland is two strokes back on 8-under in a tie with Adam Scott, Jon Rahm, Lanto Griffin and Sam Burns.  Rory McIlroy and Ryan Palmer are in a small group immediately behind them on 7-under.

However, there is some controversy involving Reed and a rules issue.

Third-round co-leader Patrick Reed found himself dealing with another rules issue on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Open when he sought relief for an embedded ball -- that television replays show had first bounced -- and then picked up the ball before a rules official could arrive.  Story at the link.

Ortiz began his third round in a tie at 21st place on 4-under par. His fight to rise on the leaderboard needed perseverance. Pars on the first two holes were followed by a bogey, and more pars followed. It was only when he reached the back nine he was really able to start moving ahead.  Shot by shot description at Fansided.

Ortiz said that for the most part the round was stress-free, except for the 9th hole.

“It was one of those holes that I hit it five times and I made 5.  I tried to knock down a wedge and hit it just a touch too hard, went over the green, left myself short sided.  I hit a perfect chip shot. Kind of almost like a flop shot, checked and made it. I feel like I played three holes in one hole, it was just exhausting hitting out of the rough.”

Ortiz chipped in from 58 feet for an unlikely par.
