Solheim Cup controversy; Raw emotions surface

Team Europe's Madelene Sagstrom struggled to keep her emotions in check after a rules controversy erupted on the first day of the Solheim Cup on Saturday.

The United States' Nelly Korda was putting for an eagle on the par-five 13th during the afternoon fourball session, when her ball stopped on the edge of the hole and was picked up by Sagstrom and handed back to her.

Officials quickly intervened, ruling that Korda's ball was overhanging the lip and that Sagstrom had not waited the mandatory 10 seconds... Read more

Madelene Sagstrom’s jaw trembled. She was fighting to stay composed while discussing a controversial rules decision that ultimately proved the difference – at least score wise – in her team’s afternoon fourballs loss.

It wasn’t any less emotional for the victors.

Nelly Korda, trying to explain her version of events, teared up while speaking to a small media corps. She backed away from the microphone, teary-eyed and shaking.  Read more

World number one Nelly Korda benefited from a controversial ruling as the United States looked to fight back from an early deficit in the 17th Solheim Cup.

Playing alongside Ally Ewing in the afternoon fourballs, Korda’s eagle putt on the 13th stopped on the edge of the hole, but her ball was swiftly picked up by Europe’s Madelene Sagstrom, conceding a birdie.

However, Sagstrom was deemed to have not waited long enough and Korda was credited with an eagle to win the hole and move one up.  Read more

Catriona Matthew’s side ended the day with the three-point lead they had earned from the morning foursomes, but all the talk afterwards was of what happened in the first afternoon fourball match.
