TOUR Players entering the Bear Trap: Honda Classic, 18-21 March, PGA TOUR 2021

PGA TOUR 2021:  The Honda Classic, PGA National - The Champion Course, 18-21 March

This week the PGA TOUR is in South Florida for the Honda Classic.

The tournament is held at the PGA National on The Champion course.

Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for major tournament play, The Champion course at PGA National Resort was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 2014.  The Champion features the Bear Trap, which spans three exacting holes designed by Jack Nicklaus.  Nicklaus describes the Bear Trap here.  "Intimidating", "demanding",  "treacherous" and "perilous" are all descriptors of this challenging stretch of golf.

So, PGA TOUR players who survived "The Concussion", the wild winds of Genesis and the nightmare on the 17th at THE PLAYERS, now face the "king cobra of a course" as described by an NYT journalist.

Here is how Adam Stanley describes it on The First Look:

PGA National (Champion), 7,125 yards, par 70. Jack Nicklaus re-worked the tricky Tom and George Fazio layout in 1990 and 2014 and it has been long ranked as one of the hardest the TOUR plays every year. The Bear Trap (No’s 15-17) is a water-soaked stretch that makes for high drama as players look to close out their rounds. PGA National’s Champion Course has hosted The Honda Classic every season since 2007 and rewards accuracy over everything else.

Sungjae Im will be defending his first TOUR title at the Honda Classic.

Also from The First Look:

Im kicked off Sunday [1st March 2020] with four birdies in his first five holes and finished just as strong, with birdies on two of his final holes. He became the seventh South Korean to win on TOUR. Tommy Fleetwood finished third, while Daniel Berger, Lee Westwood, Brendan Steele, and fellow South Korean Byeong Hun An finished T4.

Aussie Cameron Davis finished tied in 8th place in 2020, just four shots off the lead.
