Jason Day takes a three shot lead into the weekend at rain-soaked Potomac

POTOMAC, Md. — It was a good day for a book and a bath, but not golf.

And yet golf it was under a steady drizzle that sometimes gave way to a downpour in the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

“When you have conditions like this,” said Jason Day (67, 10 under total), who will take a three shot lead into the weekend, “it's really hard to commit to a shot because you're going in there and you're doing it kind of a lot quicker than your normal pre-shot routine, so you have to force yourself to hit the shot and trust that.”

No, a normal pre-shot routine does not include the intricate player-caddie umbrella dance that was the norm Friday. With more rain plus wind and unseasonably cold temperatures forecast for the weekend, the tournament is turning into a mind game, even for the leaders.  Read more

POTOMAC, Md. — Max Homa figured they'd get eight holes in, and even that felt optimistic. The radar forecast around TPC Potomac on Friday showed green, yellow and some more green, promising to make the second round of the Wells Fargo Championshiip a slog that could well bleed into Saturday, when the weather's supposed to get even worse.  Read more

TPC Potomac bit back on Friday, as the weather was the main storyline in the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship. With a steady dose of heavy rain rolling into the area, players struggled to overcome the soggy golf course, luscious rough and the mental strain which inevitably comes with playing in such conditions. The par 70 averaged nearly three strokes over for the day, a far cry from the under-par average it surrendered to players in the opening round.  Read more

Course:  TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, par 70, 7,160 yards. This is a one-year departure from the Quail Hollow Club, as the North Carolinian club will play host to the Presidents Cup in September. TPC Potomac last hosted the PGA TOUR in 2018 and is a 21-time TOUR host. The course meanders through numerous creeks and streams – including the Rock Run Stream Valley, a main tributary of the Potomac River – and wooded terrain.
