The York Golf Club can be traced back with certainty to 1901 but was probably established before that. Natural hazards included a gravelpit, which, it is said, took one player 22 strokes to negotiate. The old course was sold in 1934-35 and the club, together with the clubhouse was moved to a site south of Mount Brown, and extended to 18 holes. The club has since moved to its present site in 1957, where a new clubhouse was erected.
