ATLANTA — Scottie Scheffler might have had a roller coaster of an opening round Thursday at the TOUR Championship if only he had been paying attention to the scoreboards.
Scheffler started with a two-shot lead as the No. 1 seed in the FedExCup. He led by as many as six shots on the front nine. Then his lead was down to two. And when he finished with three straight birdies for a 5-under 65, he was five strokes ahead of Xander Schauffele...

Rory McIlroy improved his starting score of -4 by three shots with a 67 but is eight behind leader Scottie Scheffler in a tie for sixth at the PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.
Players start the Georgia event with their shot advantages determined by their place in the FedEx Cup standings.
Nobody had a wilder day than McIlroy. He hit his opening tee shot out of bounds and wound up with a triple bogey at the first. He was four-over through four before playing the final 14 holes in seven-under, featuring an eagle at the sixth hole. His final tally also had eight birdies, four bogeys and just four pars. Read more

Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler carded a first-round 5-under par to move to 15-under overall and maintain his lead through the first 18 holes of the 2022 Tour Championship in Atlanta.
Scheffler made par on four of his first five holes Thursday at East Lake Golf Club. He made birdie on No. 3 and sank an eagle on No. 6. Scheffler closed out his front-nine with a bogey. He made par on his first six holes on the back-nine. The No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking then closed out the round with three-consecutive birdies. Read more
