TORONTO (AP) — Wyndham Clark started the week with a late charge to play his way into the U.S. Open in a qualifier, and then he stayed hot Thursday in the RBC Canadian Open for a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead.
Clark opened with five birdies in nine holes and kept bogeys off his card at St. George's Golf and Country Club for the third round of his PGA TOUR career at 63 or lower. Read more

TORONTO -- Warm sunshine pierced the overcast sky during the first round of the RBC Canadian Open, even as the PGA Tour event was overshadowed by other news in the world of golf.
Wyndham Clark held on to his clubhouse lead to finish the first round of the Canadian Open atop the leaderboard. No one in Thursday afternoon's wave came close to the American's bogey-free 7-under 63....
Matt Fitzpatrick sat second, a shot behind Clark, at the 111th edition of Canada's national men's golf championship. Doug Ghim and Harold Varner III were tied for third at 5 under. Varner was the only player in the afternoon to crack the top three. Read more

At 7:02 a.m., under clouds that lingered after overnight rain, the all-Canadian trio of Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Hadwin and Mike Weir began their rounds and were followed by the featured group of McIlroy, the 2019 champion, Thomas and Corey Conners, of Listowel, Ont.
Decent-sized crowds, even at that ungodly hour, cheered loudly when Hughes and Hadwin made birdies to begin.
Hughes had them roaring louder with an eagle on his third hole of the day — the par-5 11th — and, at 3 under through three holes, he briefly held the lead. Talk about a good start to your first RBC Canadian Open in three years. Read more

Wyndham Clark fired a seven-under-par 63 to grab a one-shot lead after the first round of the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto on Thursday.
The 28-year-old American, chasing his first PGA Tour victory five years after turning professional, reeled off seven birdies in a bogey-free round at St George's Golf Course.
That was good enough for a one-shot lead over England's Matt Fitzpatrick, who posted a six-under par 64. Read more
